The Bavarian Minister of the Interior, Joachim Herrmann, visited the Bavarian Research Centre for Interreligious Discourse (BaFID) at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg last Friday, 28 June 2024. The research centre, founded in October 2020, is funded by the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior, Sport and Integration. Since June, the centre has been working with a full team of qualified staff under the direction of Prof. Dr. Tamer on the implementation of three central goals:

  • the examination of fundamental content and key concepts of the monotheistic religions of Judaism, Christianity and Islam about each other and the consideration of their intellectual contexts in a discursive manner
  • the transfer of this knowledge to civil society in the form of educational events
  • promoting the integration of people of different religions.

The knowledge gained is to be communicated to society in a forward-looking manner to promote mutual understanding between religious communities and social cohesion. Academic events make an important contribution to international research, while public events disseminate knowledge to civil society. The team is also currently working on various projects, including the creation of educational materials, cooperation with schools and the production of a video series.

During his visit, the Minister of the Interior emphasised that the integration of all those seeking protection in Germany, regardless of their religious affiliation, is a top priority. The BaFID makes an important contribution to this, as its concentrated expertise produces scientifically sound materials and disseminates them to society. Radicalisation of a religious and political nature can be counteracted through the dissemination of well-founded knowledge in civil society.

The BaFID team is delighted with the support of the Minister of the Interior and his continued interest in the work of the centre.
