Day of Repentance and Prayer

The Day of Prayer and Repentance is a public holiday for Protestant Christians. It is celebrated on the last Wednesday before the last Sunday of the Protestant church year, known as Eternity Sunday. Except for the Free State of Saxony, the Day of Prayer and Repentance was abolished as a public holiday in Germany in 1995. In the Free State of Bavaria, however, pupils have time off school to take part in the penitential services. During these services, the faithful are encouraged to critically scrutinize their own lives, repent, and reorient their lives towards God.
