Biography

Nathanael Riemer pursued his academic studies in Jewish Studies, German Studies, Philosophy, and History at the universities of Tübingen, Cologne, Jerusalem, Potsdam, and Tel Aviv. In 2009, he earned his doctorate from the University of Potsdam with a dissertation titled “Zwischen Tradition und Häresie. ‘Beer Sheva’ – an encyclopedia of Jewish knowledge in the early modern period,” which explored the dissemination of knowledge in early modern Judaism. From 2013 to 2020, he served as a Junior Professor of Jewish Studies, specializing in Interreligious Encounters at the University of Potsdam. During this time, he also held visiting professorships in Israel, China, Russia, South Africa, and the United States, and was a fellow at the Herbert D. Katz Center for Advanced Judaic Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. From 2021 to 2023, Nathanael taught German, history, and social and civic engagement.

At BaFID, Nathanael Riemer is a Judaist specializing in the study of Judaism. His research focuses on the material cultures of Judaism and Jewish literatures, as well as popular cultures, including video games and religious comics, from a religious studies perspective.
